3. Progressing Through the Hierarchy

The modules in the home kit have been arranged according to a very specific sequence.  It’s important to move through and master each module before moving on to the next.

Starting with module one, look at all of the expected behaviours, work through the social story for that kit, and develop your fear hierarchy.  Then, move through the stages of the social story, modifying the sight, sound, or touch that the client is currently uncomfortable with. At all times, observe the client to gauge any nervousness or tension. If tension is observed, give them the cue to self-regulate and if they are unable, back up a step.

Make sure to reinforce them often. This might be as simple as giving praise, or there might be a favourite activity, or food/beverage treat that works. We want the training to be relaxed and positive. Keep working through the sequence in order until they are able to complete all of the steps in order with little to no tension observed.

In appropriate places in the modules, we have included common sounds, including the dental chair moving up and down, the sound of the suction straw, and the sound of the x ray machine.  The video segments also follow the social story modules and kit sets. Again, moving through the sounds, and sights of the videos and files, keep the client relaxed, modifying volume or brightness based on his/her responses.
